Kinda shocked the "they sound like Pinhead Gunpowder & Jawbreaker with calmer vocals" were pretty much right.

So good. It does strike me as a little more Jetsy than Jawbry, but certainly more rockin'.  The Cometbus influence is a very good thing here.

-- Posted by locationiseverything on 5:36 pm on Nov. 16, 2008

Sounds nothing like Jets to me. Much more Bay Area influenced.

-- Posted by Your Mom on 6:25 pm on Nov. 16, 2008

Green Day 1039 and Kerplunk come to mind.  In only the most flattering way.

Just the vocals, the way he's singing reminds me of Jets more than Jawbreaker, musically its definitely pop-punk and nothing like JTB.

These just keep getting better:

Nice! cool vids, except for that obnoxious skank wearing the red dress. Looks like the kind of girl I'd like to drown in a vat of hot donkey piss.

heh. I guess The Thorns Of Life should prepare themselves for their audience's (predictable) Battle cry: "PLAY SWEET AVENUE!!" During JTB's tenure it was "PLAY KISS THE BOTTLE!".

You can ignore your past, but you can't hide from it.

Oh holy shit that girl was a bitch. She was so insanely pissed that people were taking pictures, saying it it was more punk to just enjoy the show...but wasn't it Blake himself that had quite a lot to say about the merits of NOT being punk in a certain song???

Regardless, Thorns of Life were amazing. I was never able to see JB or JTB so this was all I could ever ask for, really. Incredibly perfect, the songs were the best, it's all we could want, let's pray for a record and a tour.

Oh and thanks to Doug about the heads up for the show!!

Here's some more photos from the show:

Huh. Wow, who knew I was such an insanely great judge of character. Although,I'm confused about her "being pissed" about people snapping photos. I mean what business is it of hers? what difference could this possibly make to her? Is she some kind of sacred guardian of this new band's likeness. "The Thorns Of Life Image Nazi"? heh.

Or was it because it was the low-key/semi-secret unveiling of Blake & Aaron's new band - and she felt like it was something that shouldn't be exploited/exposed in some way and so she took this burden upon her shoulders and annoited herself scene babysitter?

Fuck, how is that 'punk' anyway?? How is 'not taking pictures' a punk thing to do? That's hilarious, especially considering theband is obviously way past/above some ridiculous code that let's face it, doesn't mean shit.

Let me just say, if I had been there, and she had said something like that to me, I would've whipped my John Thomas out, pissed all over her leg, shake it out once, then zip up and "say "HOW WAS THAT HONEY?!?!? WUZ THAT PUNK ENUFF FER YA?!?!?!?!"

What this bitch needs is a life. A career, a mortgage, a spouse, a family to feed and support, a fucking reality check. Then all this stupid bullshit about what's punk and what ain't would melt away quickern you could say "Sid Vicious Rulez!" forever. Give me a fucking break.

I'd like to reiterate my desire to drown this twat in a vat of donkey piss. Sounds like it would be a mercy killing.

Oh, and guys - let me just go on record and say that anyone who uses the word "Broseph" ISN'T punk, dewd.

Sounds like she was a luddite...later on did you see her you attacking any mechanized looms?
My favorite thing to say to people who talk about what is or isn't punk is ...."Punk is whatever you say it's not".
Three cheers for the 2nd picture down with the dude behind the amps swilling a beer and holding one hands up in rapture! Looks like fun, hopefully they'll make their way down to Florida, the armpit of the south. They should have played The Fest, I'd have gone for sure then...

-- Posted by locationiseverything on 6:17 pm on Nov. 17, 2008

I love how the girl is waving her hand up and down relentlessly and yet it is the camera snaps that are the distraction.

Aaron's drumming is a perfect compliment to Blake.

Kinda OT - but Hugh, I wanted to compliment you on your terrific blog. A nice looking, entertaining and informative little corner of the web I must say - one that I would recommend to any indie rock/pop fans. Well done. Keep up the good work.

Agreed.  I've always been a fan of it in whatever iteration over the years.

Thanks for the love DBZ and Andon. I've finally found a stable  place and layout for it...just need to update more.

I only took a few photos because I was wayyy too close for the flash to be constantly going off, but there's at least one good one in there--

-- Posted by friendly fire on 10:43 pm on Nov. 25, 2008

Out of curiosity, how many people were wearing JB or Jets t-shirts?

-- Posted by keep the city clean on 6:38 am on Nov. 26, 2008

None at show 2; I think they would have been mauled via snickering

-- Posted by DividedByZero on 4:08 pm on Nov. 26, 2008

right, because it's not really about the music or being a fan anymore - it's about who can be the biggest apathetic hipster douche-jacket in the room... usually wearing a porkpie hat, one of those dipshit scarves and a $40 Don't Mess With Texas Shirt even though they aren't from Texas and have never been there.

-- Posted by keep the city clean on 8:14 pm on Nov. 26, 2008

everybody looks cooler in the early 90s jawbreaker youtube videos anyhow

On behalf of skinny, bearded fellows I take offense to this.  I can't help that I'm a stick and that without a beard I look like I'm 12!
